London United had a tough but promising start to the season.
Last weekend London United had a taste of what lies ahead of them in this season. On Saturday they travelled to Northumbria University to start their campaign in the Patrons Cup. London United never recovered from a very poor start when they were trailing by 17 points in the first quarter. They briefly threatened with a comeback in the second quarter when aggressive defence by the young Londoners led to a succession of steals and reduced deficit to single digits. Unfortunately in the second half Northumbria which greatly benefited from an advantage on both boards established their dominance and safely sailed to a 77-42 victory.
On Sunday London United suffered an early exit from the National Cup when they were defeated by Ealing Phoenicians 84-83. It was a tightly contested game from the very beginning until the middle of 4th quarter when a succession of unforced errors allowed Phoenicians to take a 15 point lead. Unfazed by that, the young Londoners applied aggressive full court defence which allowed them to level the game at 83 a piece with 15 seconds remaining. A foul committed with 0.5 second remaining on the shot clock, sent the Phoenicians point guard to the free throw line. He converted one of his shots, sealing an 84-83 victory for Phoenicians.
Coach Jack Majewski was very far from being pessimistic after 2 defeat’s in one weekend ”We obviously expected that this will be a very difficult season for us and a huge learning experience for these boys. They will be constantly playing against senior players and that requires a long period of adjustment. Other teams will always have an advantage in size, strength and experience but I’m sure that this is the right way to prepare our players for their future in professional basketball”.
