ABOUT THE CLUB…
However, this setback did not wipe out the London United brand from the London basketball landscape. London United Basketball re-established itself at Richmond upon Thames College in order to concentrate on developing young elite basketball players and subsequently joined forces with Spelthorne Atoms Junior Basketball Club to create an extensive Junior Programme under the London United Basketball Club umbrella which enabled the Club to reach all age groups from Under 10s through to Senior Level.
In seasons 2008/09 and 2009/10 London United won promotion in two consecutive seasons and is now playing in England Basketball League Division Two. On top of this, in 2010 the Men’s team also won the National Shield and in 2011 finished as a Runner up in Patron’s Cup.
London United Basketball Club has also built an extensive network of European contacts which has enabled the players to travel to various countries in order to measure their skills against other high profile European Clubs and national teams. This has led to the Club establishing Future Stars (see www.futurestars.uk.com) which has become one of the most prestigious international junior basketball events in Europe. This Event is a unique combination of an International U18 Tournament, Coaching Conference and a Junior Basketball Training Camp. Over its successful four year existence Future Stars can boast participation from the national U18 teams of Spain, Italy, Israel, France, Croatia, Slovenia, Poland, Sweden and England.
Summer 2010 brought an exciting new development when London United joined forces with The Harefield Academy in Harefield, near Uxbridge, in order to create and run their new Basketball Programme for Sporting Excellence.
THE CURRENT PROGRAMME...
London United has made the strategic decision that its future lies in producing a top quality programme for young basketball players and has entered into a partnership with The Harefield Academy to deliver such a programme. This Programme provides talented young basketball athletes with a good academic education alongside the opportunity to improve their basketball skills and their physical development to a level at which they could compete at national and international level.
Based on the model adopted by many educational institutions in Europe, students have both their basketball training and their strength and conditioning training timetabled around their regular classes in normal curriculum time. Each student receives 14 hours of dedicated basketball coaching each week, together with 5 hours of fitness training in addition to their National League Match Schedule.
The London United–Harefield Academy youngsters currently compete in England Basketball U18 Premier South League and U-18 Conference Men’s Division Two .
THE FUTURE…
The Club is committed to developing its junior programme into a centre of excellence for talented young basketball players from the UK and other European countries. Thanks to The Harefield Academy with its own on-site student accommodation, this can be achievable. From September 2011 the Club is offering accommodation to promising young talent from the UK and abroad in this new state of the art Hall of Residence.
The Programme will benefit from frequent trips abroad and the players will also be able to participate in the Future Stars Tournaments.
THE COMMUNITY…
As well as our extensive contacts with European and other corporate partners, we understand that the key to success depends mainly on our involvement with local communities. The grass roots work of London United is embedded within the London Boroughs of Richmond, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Wandsworth and Kingston, as well as the adjoining District of Spelthorne in Surrey. Our community programme not only provides strong sporting expertise and coaching, but also enables schools and community groups to access educational programmes, through our links with The Harefield Academy and Kingston University, covering healthy living, crime prevention and other social issues.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTNERS…
With the Olympic Games taking place in London in 2012, these are exciting times for the world of sport. We want to be instrumental in bringing a high profile Olympic sport to the youth of today and the athletes of tomorrow.
